What Is E-Counselling?

E-Counselling is an electronic version of a  professional relationship between you and me, which allows us to  communicate via a secure, encrypted, web based service. It is similar to  traditional,  face-to-face counselling except we will exchange secure  emails instead of meeting personally.  The emails can be exchanged over a  period of days or even weeks depending on your availability and/or  desire. All our sessions are conducted through a secure email service.

What are the pros and cons of E-Counselling?

Pros:

  • Convenient, time efficient
  • Accessible to those in remote areas, have transportation or accessibility issues
  • Have a  permanent record of sessions for review
  • Anonymity may allow for greater disclosure
  • Allows for time for reflection and pacing of counselling
  • Writing out your thoughts may aid in processing and resolving of the issue

Cons:

  • Maybe more difficult to establish a therapeutic  relationship
  • Risk of misunderstanding because of the absence of physical cues
  • Possible privacy and security issues (which is the case with any online activity)
  • Not suitable for individuals under the age of 18 years
  • Is not suitable for certain types of mental health conditions–please see below
